Possum Kingdom State Park offers a terrific opportunity for birders of all experience levels.
The park offers several different environments which allow for viewing a wide variety of bird species.
The upper part of the park is grassland with scattered timber. The middle of the park is heavy timber consisting mostly of
juniper and mesquite with scattered oaks and cedar elms. The lower part of the park is lake front, some heavily timbered and
some open with scattered tree cover.
There are too many species to name them all, but painted
buntings are fairly common and the park is said to have golden cheeked warblers as well. Water birds abound, multiple raptor
species are common, and night birds such as Chuck-wills-widow are also common
From
mid march through mid august, there are large numbers of black-chinned hummingbirds which nest in the park.
